Function Before Fashion's outerwear and gear is handcrafted in Crested Butte, Colorado.  Since 1991, FBF has been creating top-quality designs for the outdoor enthusiast. Jackets, bibs, messenger bags, bike packs, backpacks, hats and rescue sleds are extensively trail-tested for durability and comfort.

FBF's foundation and philosophy stems from a true dedication to pushing the boundaries of outdoor activities. Everything has a purpose; each strap, pocket and zipper has a function; defining the name: Function Before Fashion. Attention to detail and quality handcrafted construction ensure that each FBF product is the burliest out there, and has attracted business from mountaineering guide companies, local fire departments and ski champions.

A life-long outdoor enthusiast, Mark Peterson has been skiing since the age of five. Raised in the Seattle area, he hiked, biked, paddled and skied his way through the Pacific Northwest. Mark founded Function Before Fashion while finishing his business degree at Western State College in Colorado—just down the mountain road from Crested Butte, where FBF operations and retail store are now located.


Mark started FBF wanting to make more satisfying and reliable outdoor gear. With trial and determination he was soon creating custom designs and products that met his high expectations. Mark believes in durability (function before fashion), and tests all of FBF’s products personally. Featured in early Matchstick Productions' ski films, he's a pro at pushing boundaries of outdoor activities and combining it with hard-core testing for Function Before Fashion gear.
